Vineyard Information: APPLETOP FARM is Certified Organic farm located within the Georgian Bay Wine Growing Region about 2 1/2 Hour drive from our Vineyard. Their Plant Hardiness Zone teeters between 6A to 5B – which compared to our 6B can be a difference of upwards of 6’C. All that said, there are more comparables to these zones than 7A which reflects our vision of wine. The plants (planted in 2013 and 2014) are well established and are planted alongside pear and apple trees with wild grasses to add biodiversity. The soil consists of sandy, clay loam of calcareous parent material from the Niagara Escarpment Blue Mountains geological formation. The L’Acadie Blanc variety was introduced into Niagara in 1953. When trained and pruned properly, it can be a very high yielding plant. You can spot the varietal by identifying it with its red shoots. Although it’s a white grape variety, the young leaves, shoots, and stems are genetically red. The loose bunches will keep botrytis bunch rot at bay during wet and humid conditions. It is notably planted in cooler regions like the Nova Scotia, Quebec and Northern Ontario to name a few. The result from these characteristics from the cooler growing regions gives a winemaker flexibility in production methods (Oak Aging, Lees Aging, Skin Contact, Etc)
